International Baccalaureate Information
International Baccalaureate is a global network of schools, educators, students, and parents whose mission is “to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help create a better world through intercultural understanding and respect”.
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. IB schools offer challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment that encourage students to be active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
At New Mexico International School, we offer the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), which encompasses grades K-5, and the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), which defines our middle school curriculum.
The MYP builds on the PYP’s foundation, developing the skills and knowledge acquired in the Primary Years Programme while introducing a more structured academic approach. The PYP focuses on inquiry-based learning for the whole child, while the MYP transitions to more specialized, subject-based interdisciplinary learning with increased independence and critical thinking within disciplinary frameworks. Key connections include the evolution of transdisciplinary themes into global contexts and the continuous development of the IB Learner Profile traits and the Approaches to Learning skills.

Cynthia Pedrotty
PYP Coordinator
I have taught at NMIS since 2015 and have loved and treasured every year being part of our amazing NMIS family! I’m currently the Program Coordinator over the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Bilingual Program.
The Learner Profile Attributes are taught at NMIS since kindergarten through our PYP program, which focuses on teaching our students to respect themselves, others, and the world around them. Students at NMIS not only excel academically but also develop a moral consciousness to take action and make positive changes in their communities.
You can learn more about our PYP program and what makes NMIS unique by watching the videos made by our students below. Hope you decide to join us in our quest to help make the world a better place by raising caring leaders who will want to make positive changes in the world.

Lauren Gutierrez
MYP Coordinator
I have been a bilingual teacher in Albuquerque for 14 years, following three years of teaching in Nicaragua. In my various roles as a bilingual teacher, I developed a garden curriculum and a student journalism program. After a year of traveling through Bolivia and Argentina, I found my place at the NMIS middle school.
My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that education should empower students to think critically, solve problems, and act as responsible global citizens. I strive to:
- Connect learning to the real world through hands-on experiences and meaningful discourse that builds relevance and inspires principled action.
- Facilitate inquiry-driven learning, developing critical thinking, reflection, and a sense of agency.
- Create an interdisciplinary, culturally responsive curriculum that reflects global diversity and empowers students to be agents of positive social change.
- Promote collaboration among teachers, students, families, and communities in pursuit of equity and excellence.
- Support teacher growth, recognizing that schools should be learning communities where educators reflect, innovate, and meet the evolving needs of their students.
